The Wrath of Nora
My eldest sister Nora and I are very close but we haven't always been. Since the passing of our folks, she's the 'maternal' figure in the family. Every family has one, you know...the one that everyone goes to for life's advise and encouragement. She's always ready with a smile, a hug and honesty. She has never sugar coated anything and will tell you exactly what you NEED to hear, not what you WANT to hear. Some find that abrasive. Those who know her appreciate… Continue

I had been feeling unusually tired and unable to focus for a few months. Sarah finally broke through my wall of stubbornness and made me call the doctor. I went for routine blood work. "Yadda, yadda, we'll let you know in a few days blah blah blah..." all the medical speak went in one ear and out the other. I went home kept plugging along, finding it more and more difficult to get my self motivated. Something was off. I had known it for months but I was stubborn and just didn't want to deal… Continue

Last year Charlie an I took off for the lake. We had all our gear, a cooler, a few beers and bait all ready. It was a day of sunshine, a rare one for May but we took advantage of it feeling blessed by the gods and took the boat out.
Everything was going great. Charlie caught a few good trout, I hauled in a nice size bass and we were reminiscing about old times. Gotta love the mixture of fishing, good weather and a few beers!
Around 2pm we had a pretty good haul. We were heading… Continue

My poem is inspired by the last line in Lewis Carroll's
"A Boat Beneath the Sky"
Nothing more can make me sigh
than a boat beneath the summer sky
the water clear and up waist high
I watch reflective clouds float by
The fish may bite or stay away
It doesn't matter anyway
I've got a pole and time to play
I'll sit right here come what may
There's time to think and contemplate
There's time to simply sit and… Continue

When the news came that Rachel was expecting, my mind automatically went crazy. Was I truly OLD enough for this? How did this happen? When did she grow up? Where did the time go? Was she ready? Was I ready?
Of course I wasn't given the choice of being ready or not, it simply was a fact and one that took my mind a little time to wrap around.
I was going to be someone's grandfather. Could I do this? Aren't grandfathers supposed to be old & wrinkly? I rolled to the mirror and saw the… Continue

"Hawks losing 3 to nothing" I took a deep breath and smelled potroast and heard Liseli humming in the kitchen. The door opened and in came Rebecca and Leleo, Rachel, Somak and Paul followed by Sam, Emily, Embry and the others. My whole family was here. My friends. It was the fall harvest.
There was nothing that I was more thankful for than being hit in the chest by Jake's football.

“A Native American grandfather, talking to his young grandson tells the boy about the two wolves inside of him struggling with each other. The first is the wolf of peace, love and kindness. The other wolf is fear, greed and hatred. "Which wolf will win, grandfather?" asks the young boy.
"Whichever one I feed," is the reply.”
As I journey into the adventure of being a grandfather, many… Continue

"Always look ahead" was what my father always told me. Being the way I am, I always have held my elders words in high regard. Certain people may think of them as old fashioned or out of date but I know better. Dedication, sweat, blood, tears... all of that and more, have been poured down generation to generation. Each of us takes the important bits and melds them within our own way of life. "Fighting gets you no where" is one I've heard a million times. God knows I didn't listen to that one.… Continue

My name is Billy Black
I am a tribal elder in the Quileute Nation. We live in La Push, a small community near Forks, Washington. My son, Jacob, twin daughters, Rachel and Rebecca are my only family. I lost my wife, Sarah, in a car accident some years ago. It was tragic and we all struggle to move forward in her absence.
My life has changed significantly over the past year and a half...I've become quite close with Tiffany Call and hope to explore our relationship further.
My best… Continue

Sarah was full of creative genius, her hands were in a constant state of motion and she was never happier than when she was creating.
Photography and clay were her muses, if she wasn't out on the Res with her camera in hand, she was in the back room sitting and throwing clay.
No, not throwing as in hurling a lob of clay at the wall; throwing in the sense of pottery making.
Sarah took classes in town. She wasn't adept with basket weaving like many of the others… Continue

Lying on my bed at the cottage, I run down the fight again and just find myself getting more frustrated and upset. I hate fighting with Jake and usually we fight about silly stuff, like me going somewhere and not telling him or if I go on a hunt alone. Things were we both get upset and then see the silliness and end up laughing about it.
But tonight’s fight was so different, it was seriously a grown up fight and to me a window into fights as a married couple one day. A fight that… Continue

Once I was able to control my quaking body, I called Chief Black. He could hear it in my voice, he knew that I now knew Embry’s secret. I was not sure I could drive, so he came to the house. When he arrived, I was cleaning up, finding small pieces of Embry’s clothes everywhere. It explained why he suddenly needed new clothes a few years ago. I had thought it was just a growth spurt. Some spurt.
I had some tea ready for Chief Black and set the tea service in front of him on… Continue

To say finding out that the legends of the Quileute tribe were real was a surprise would be an understatement. The biggest surprise, though, was finding out that the father of my son was a carrier of the gene that forced my son to become a wolf. Not a werewolf, although that term has been thrown around. He is not affected by the moon. His trigger is something much colder and much closer in proximity; the vampires.
He had first changed years before I found out. He hid it from… Continue
