Chapter 1, day 1

Seattle

 

 

It all begins on a warm sunny spring day in Seattle, Washington.  People are shopping and communing to and from work, little do they know that teenage boy is running through the mob of people.  He is being chased by a policeman through the streets, the boy is a very shabby individual, and his clothes are faded and worn out with holes in them.  The boy is about 18 years old, and the boy is very fast at running.  The cop is having a hard time keeping up with him.  Suddenly the boy turns a corner and runs down an alleyway where another cop is waiting for him.  He suddenly screeches to a halt and tries to dodge the policemen, but to no avail.  The policeman both grabs him and handcuffed his hands behind his back and takes him to the squad car. They place the boy in the back seat, then the policeman both get into the front seats, then drive to the police station downtown.

When they arrive they take the boy into the police station and proceed to book him and process him, then one of the detectives makes a phone call to his uncle named Charlie Swan who is a policeman in forks, Washington.

Well in forks, officer Swan hears the phone ringing in the police station he walks to the phone and answers it.  The detective on the other line asks officer Swan “Do you have a nephew named Dale.” Charlie replies “Yes, did you find him?” The detective replies “Yes, we found him wandering Seattle, and the reason I am calling you is to ask what you would like done with him.” Charlie replies “I will come and get him as soon as possible.”  The detective replied “Very well we will hold him here until you arrive, goodbye.” 

Charlie hangs up and turns to his deputy and replies “I have to go to Seattle you think you can hold the fort here?” The deputy replies “Sure.”  With that Charlie grabs his car keys and walks outside to his car, unlocks the driver side gets in starts his car and drives to Seattle which is a five hour drive.  When he finally arrives at the police station he gets out of his car and goes into the building, walks up to the detective and says “I am here to pick up my nephew Dale.”  The deputy replies “Sure we have him in the holding pen; I will go and get him.”  With that the Deputy goes downstairs and brings up the teenage boy and uncuffs him, Charlie signs papers that give him custody of the boy then Charlie and the boy walkout of the police station to Charlie's car. 

With neither one of them talking to each other, however during the long journey back to Forks they begin talking to one another Charlie looks at his nephew and asks “Why did you run off?” The boy replies “I don't want to talk about it.”  Charlie realizing that this is possibly a touchy subject decides to change the subject, Charlie says “You have  missed a lot since you disappeared Bella is married now, she lives in Forks also with her husband Edward, that reminds me you really don't have any place to stay right now Bella's things are still in her room at the house.”  With that Charlie whips out his cell phone and calls Carlisle when Carlisle picks up Charlie asks “Hi, Dr Cullen how’s it going I was wondering if you could do me a favor my nephew is here and Bella’s things are still at my place and I right now don’t have anywhere he could stay and I was wondering if you could help me out?; until I can move Bell’s things so he has a place to stay.” Carlisle replies “Well, we do have an empty room here since Edward and Bella now live in the cottage that we built them he can stay in Edwards’s room.”  Charlie agrees and says “Okay, I'll swing by and buy him a new outfit the clothes he has on looks like they're going to fall off at any moment; I’ll bring him by their, OK?” Carlisle replies “Sure I’ll talk to Esme and have Emmet began cleaning out Edwards’s room.” Charlie says “Ok thanks I owe you one I will see later, by.”  He looks at his nephew and says “The Cullen’s are a good family that Bella belongs to it will only be temporary until I get Bella's room ready for you.”

Dale only looks out the window without responding to Charlie soon they were surrounded by trees everywhere and Dale no longer saw any buildings, they did not talk the rest of the way there.  Until they got to Forks, once they arrived Charlie drove to his house and told Dale to wait in the car while he went into his house and got Dale some clothes that he could wear, the clothes were Charlie's old ones that no longer fit him.  They were clean and consist of a T-shirt and a pair blue jeans and a pair of socks.  Charlie threw them in a sack then walked back to the car he climbed into the car and handed Dale the bag, then started the car and drove to the Cullen’s House, now the Cullen’s lived outside of town in the forest.  Which made Dale uncomfortable because he was used to the city life and never lived in the forest or with trees also there was no sound meaning no trains, no cars, and no loud noises?  It was too quiet for him, still all he could see is trees, he looked at Charlie and replied “Who is their neighbors Jed Clampet?” Which made Charlie chuckle, soon they were close to the entrance to the House Charlie said “Now if I could only find it, I always have trouble finding that driveway; Oh, there is.”

With that he drove up the driveway, and Dale saw the House it was a mansion it had three stories and Windows and look really rich.  Dale looks at it in shock he replied “I'm going to stay here?” Charlie chuckled at his response and replied “It will be only until I get the room cleaned out for you.”  Dale's response was “No rush, really no rush.” As they drove up the drive to the entrance to the House They both could see Carlisle and Esme standing in front of the front door to the House, Charlie stop the car turned off the engine and climb out of the car. Charlie walked over to Carlisle and they both started talking, Dale just looked all around at his new terrain the house was totally surrounded by trees and The House look like a castle Dale never saw such a big place as he got out of the car he just kept looking all around at the place.  Then Charlie said “Hey, Dale, come over here.”  Dale started walking carrying his bag toward Carlisle, Charlie says to Carlisle, “Carlisle and Esme this is Dale, Dale this is Carlisle and Esme.”  Dale looks at both of them, they seem very strange to him with their complexion of being chalky pale and golden eyes, Carlisle looks at Dale and says “Hello, so your Bella's cousin it is a pleasure to meet you.”  Carlisle extends a hand for a handshake, Dale responds in during the handshake Dale realizes that Carlisle’s hand is very cold and then he releases the shake.  Esme looks at Dale and says “Welcome to our lovely home.”  With a smile, Charlie looks around and asks “Where Isabella and Edward?”

Carlisle replies “Oh, they're around here somewhere.” Esme asks “Dale would you like to see your room.” Dale Sort of smirks and replies “Ok, sure.”  As they started walking toward the door of the House, Charlie says to Dale, “You better be good, and no running off, also no funny business.; Which reminds me.” he walked over to the car reaches in and pulled out a cell phone and says “Here Dale if you need to reach me, you can reach me with this.”  Then he tosses Dale a cell phone, then replied “I mean that no funny business.”   Dale replies “That's like telling me not to breathe, the funny business I mean.”  With that Esme takes him into the house they go up three sets of stairs turn left and began walking down a hallway toward a door.  Esme looks at Dale and said “Dale, this used to be Edwards room and we did not know really what you like so we left blank for you to fill in.”  With that she opened the door, Dale look inside the room it was all white on one side of the room there were shelves and toward the other side of the room was plenty of windows and next to the wall there was a bed with some colored bedding on it.  Esme says “What do you think?” Dale looks at the room and replied “It's OK, I guess considering what I'm used to.”  Then Esme close the door and showed Dale where the bathroom was, Esme noticed that Dale was dirty and that is clothes were dirty as well.  She asked “Maybe you need to clean up I will get you some towels, and you can change your clothes.”  With that she left Dale in the bathroom for a few minutes then open the door and handed him the towels, Dale shut the door locked it then walked over and started fiddling with the shower knobs got the water the appropriate temperature and then took off his clothes and a got cleaned up.

In the meantime Esme walked down to the kitchen area while Dale got cleaned up, by now Charlie had left and Carlisle walked into the kitchen.  Carlisle looked Esme and asked “Where is the boy at?” Esme replied “He is up stairs getting cleaned up.” Later Dale comes down all cleaned up and in new clean clothes, well clothes that Charlie used to wear, Dale now had on a Seattle Mariners T-shirt, blue jeans and sport sneakers.  He walked down the stairs into the kitchen and Carlisle and Esme had sort of a shocked look on their faces now that is little boy is now clean; he goes to the bar and sits down on a stool.  Esme said “Wow; you look like a different person.” And Carlisle replied “Well, since you are our guest are you hungry, would you like us to fix you something to eat?” Dale just looks like he did not know what to say, he has never had a meal cooked for him before sense he was with his parents, which was a long time ago.  Dale replied “I don't know, I didn't really think about eating.”  Esme replied “Surely you must be hungry after your long trip from Seattle.”  And Carlisle responded “Yes it would give us a chance to use our kitchen for the second time.”  Dale look puzzled at Carlisle response, he replied “What you guys eat out all the time?” With that Carlisle and Esme both chuckled at what Dale had said, Esme said “Let us fix you something to eat, what would you like?” Once again Dale did not know what to say he replied “Oh, anything I'm not that picky of an eater, what ever you guys eat will be fine with me.”  Carlisle and Esme looked at one another and chuckled once again at what Dale had said.  Carlisle replied “I'll just fix you an Italian dish.”  With that he and Esme began cooking, later when they were finished Dale started eating the Italian meal.  Suddenly Bella and Edward walked through the front door, and then walked into the kitchen.  Bella was surprised to see Dale after all those years of him being missing, she said “Oh, my gosh, I have not seen you in ages, where have you been?” With that Bella hugged Dale, and said “Boy I have missed you, I have not seen you since the mini tournament.”  Dale replied “It's a long story.”  Then a few minutes go by and Alice and Jasper walked in the back door that went straight into the kitchen.  Alice walked up to Dale and said “It’s about time you showed up, I knew your coming I just didn’t know when.”  And with that Alice hugged Dale, which shocked the hell out of him that this girl would hug him and he hardly knew her.

He looked at Carlisle and said “She hugged me?” Alice replied “Wow, you do smell good.”  He gave Alice a puzzled look.  Edward looked at Dale and said to Alice “Alice, perhaps you should take him to get some clothes', and it appears he has only one outfit.”  With that Alice got all excited Edward knew Alice love to shop for clothes and now she had a reason to, she immediately grabbed Dale and said “Come on, will need to get you some pairs of jeans and some dress clothes' and some nice shirts and then we will have to get you some shoes and socks, oh, this is goanna be so much fun.” Dale just looked at Edward thinking what the hell did you get me into? Alice being impatient kept saying “C'mon.”  Carlisle looked at Dale and said “Perhaps you should go with her you do need clothes'.”  With that Alice grabbed dale's hand and dragged him a long behind her with her keys in hand to her new yellow porches. Soon Alice and Dale were long gone in the distance; Bella looked at Carlisle and asked “How did Dale get here?” Carlisle replied “Charlie brought him here since his house still has your belongings in the room, and Dale has nowhere to stay so I offered him Edwards room sense he is after all family.”  Bella sighed and said “Yes, he is my cousin but I've not seen him in a long time, Well Dale and I are about three months apart we are at the same age though, boy, Dale has had a hard life.”  Esme replied “How so?” Bella started to back down from this conversation because after all it is dale's story and maybe he should tell this, Bella said “Well, maybe Dale should tell you instead of me.”  Carlisle replied “No, please continue.” 

Bella said “Ok, when I first met Dale he was 6 years old and really small for his age, but he was very happy his father and him would run through the House with dale's Nerf bows and arrows toys shooting at one another and chasing one another.  However when it came to Dale going to school he had a hard time at school, the other boys would beat him up and steal his lunch money.  I know this from my mother who was friends with dale's mom, and they would talk about it.  Then one day when he was seven and half years old he was on his way to school when three big kids beat him up so badly and threw him in the dumpster, that he had to go to the hospital for while.  For dale's parents that was the last straw, they would make sure that nobody would hurt their child any more, so when Dale got out the hospital and got strong enough he started going to a special school right after public school.  This special school taught Dale how to use his hands and feet to defend himself in a fight, at first it was very hard for him, but once he got better at it He loved it. Boy he sure was happy then and over the years he was getting better and better at martial arts he soon was in the higher belts, and by the age of 10 he was a Blue Belt decided three belts away from black belt when tragedy struck.”  At this point Bella started looking rather sad; Edward asked “Are you all right Bella?” Bell replied “I'm OK it's just poor, Dale I'll never forget that day of the Mimi tournament, still he was so excited and nervous at the same time because not only was his mom and dad goanna be there, but Charlie, my mom and I would be there as well.  So he was very excited and nervous.” Bella sort of chuckled and continued, “He was so cute in his little uniform and his pads that he had on his head hands and feet running onto the platform for his first match, the two opponents would turn and face each other and bowed Then both would turn to the referee and bowed, and then they would bowed once again to each other then the referee would say “step back in a fighting stance.” and both opponents did so then with one final command the referee said “fight!” and then the match would begin they would kick and punch one another but they could not hurt each other with the pads on their bodies each hit would give one another points, say anything to the head would be two points, anything to the chest would one point.

So with dale's first match when the referee said “Fight,” neither opponent moved they both just stood there in check then dale's instructor yelled “time!” which meant timeout Dale walked over to his instructor and asked “Yes, sir.” his instructor replied “When you get back up their, right when the referee yells fight hit your opponent as fast as you can.”  Dale was confused he said, “But Sir, you said we should never use our martial arts for attack it is only used for defense.” his instructor replied “If this was any other circumstance I would agree but this is a tournament, so hit him.”  Dale replied “Yes sir.”  With that Dale went back to the mat and bowed and the match started once again and right as the referee said “Fight” Dale hit his opponent instantly, and the referee said “Point.”  As the match wore on Dale was getting better and better at it and he was less nervous he was winning almost every match, and in-between matches he would go over to Charlie and I and ask “Where's my mom and dad have they come yet?” Charlie would say “They're not here yet, just keep going you're doing great!” Soon it was time for the final match and still dale's mom and dad still have not arrived to see Dale fight in his first mini tournament.  While Dale was on the mat with his final opponent a police deputy walked over to where Charlie was and told Charlie the bad news, that dale's mom and dad had been killed in a drunken-driving accident.  Charlie was devastated and when Dale look over to Charlie he knew something bad was going on, yet he continued with a match and won first place and got the trophy with all his fellow students cheering him on he ran over to where we were and asked “Charlie, where's Mom and Dad?” Charlie looks sadly over at Dale and said “They're not coming.”  He looked puzzled and said “Why not?” Charlie's answered “There never coming back, they're gone son, they've passed away.”  Dale look like he'd been shot he ran outside into the parking lot as fast as he could and then fell to his knees and started to cry.  Carlisle asked “Did they ever get the person that kill them.” Bell replied “Yes, he's in jail but the damage was done.”  Esme almost started tearing up replied “That pour boy.”  Then Bella said “After the funeral they were debating on where to place Dale, when Dale grabbed a few things and ran away from home, Charlie's been looking for him ever since.” Edward asked “I wonder where he went all those years.”

In meantime Alice and Dale went all over the place buying him new clothes which took most of the day then after the shopping was done they went back home  once Alice and Dale had returned, Dale was exhausted and had various bags to carry in.  Once that was done Esme went up to Dale and hugged him, Dale could not understand why he was getting so much attention he asked “Esme, what was that for?” Esme replied “I'm just so glad your back, did you have fun?” Dale's reply was less than optimistic he said “Aside from being Alice’s dress up doll i think things went OK.”  Which made everyone in the room chuckle suddenly Jasper, Emmet and Rosalie walked into the room. Emmet looked at Dale and said “Who this is?” Carlisle replied “This is Bella's cousin Dale.”  Dale replied “Hi.”  Dale look at Alice and then back at Emmet and asked “Did you know your sister is the biggest busybody in the state?” Emmet just chuckled; Dale said “And that she was getting the clothes to change into faster than I can change into them.  I don't know how she did it.”  Alice replied “Well you better get your new clothes up to your new room.”  As he started up the stairs, Rosalie said “What another human?” Dale heard what she had said and replied “And what are you a Vampire?” Rosalie Just scowled at him, all five just chuckled Carlisle replied “He is Bella's cousin, which makes him part of the family, besides he has nowhere else to go.”  Esme added Rosalie” You go easy on him he just lost his parents.”  Rosalie started up the stairs and remarked “Do you think he would be safer here with us, you remember what happened to Bella on her birthday.”  With that she went upstairs; Alice said “Well I think I'll help Dale get his clothes upstairs.” well later when all of dale's clothes was in his room, he came back downstairs and sat down on the couch in the living room, Emmet was watching a football game then suddenly Dale remembered something he grabbed the cell phone that Charlie gave him, with that he flipped up the cell phone went down the list and found Charlie's name now there were two phone numbers one was to his office, and one was to his home.  He of course dialed the one to his office, it rang a couple of times and then someone answered and said “Forks police station may I help you?” Dale replied “Yes, is officer Swan there?” The man on the other line replied “Just one moment please.”  All long Emmet was listening to dale's entire conversation, when officer Swan came on line he said “Hello?” Dale immediately changed his voice a little bit and said “Hello, I'm looking for someone and he might be in your holding cell.”  Charlie replied “Ok, what's his name?” Dale replied “Al and his last name is coholic could you please check to see if he's there?” At that moment dale's put the phone on Speaker, and the speakers said “Just one moment, Charlie looked at his deputy and asked “Do we have an alcoholic in the holding pen?” And his deputy immediately started laughing at what Charlie had said; Charlie asked him “What was so funny?” The deputy asked “Which one? “ On the other line Dale immediately erupted in laughter, he nearly fell off the couch.  Charlie thought about it for a moment and was saying to himself, “Al, coholic, alcoholic he sort of faked a laughed ha, ha, very funny who is this?” With that Dale immediately hung up the phone. And then both Dale and Emmet started laughing, Emmet said “That was a good one.”  Suddenly Bella walks into the living room and asks “What are you two laughing at?” Emmet said “Oh, dale just got finished calling Charlie up and asked him something funny.”  Bella replied “What did he ask my father?” Dale responded “I asked him if he had an alcoholic in his holding cell.”  Bella did not think that was at all funny, she told Dale “You know that Charlie is a cop and Dale your crank calling him?” Dale replied “Bella, how many times has he played a joke on you?” Bella had to admit she remembered several, Dale said “I looked at it this way, I play a joke on Charlie, Charlie thinks it's funny he calls Billy and tells Billy Then Billy tells Jacob and then it equals priceless.” Emmet said “What you don't like Jacob?” Bell answered “Are you kidding, Dale and Jacob would fight like cats and dogs when they were little, Dale, you used to call him a name didn't you?” Emmet asked “What did you call him.” Dale answered “I used to call him a stray dog.” Emmet started laughing; Dale continued to explain why he called him that he said “Jacob would follow Bella around like a puppy or stray dog and I thought it was funny so I kept calling him that.” Emmet started to say “well, did you know that Jacob is a” and before he could finish his sentence Bella interrupted him by saying “Let’s change the subject here, Okay.”  Suddenly Edward came into the room with a big grin on his face; Bella knew that Edward Read Dale's mind and was laughing to himself he said to Dale “I'm starting to like you.”  Soon it got late however Dale noticed that none of them was getting tired or sleepy in the meantime Dale was getting sleepy it must've been the shopping, he has had a full day and his eye lids started drooping.  Bell looked over at Dale on the couch who was about to fall asleep, she said “Dale you better go to bed.”  He suddenly woke up and looked around and replied “Ok” with that he got his feet and walked upstairs to the third floor and walked to his room and lay on the bed, however once they got there he could not go asleep.  It was too quiet there was not enough noise, he was so used all the sounds of the big city.  The cars and engines revving and the horns blowing, and tires screeching and the train that would be zoom by overhead, he missed all these things he listened in his room and heard nothing but silence on top of that his bed was too soft, he was used to sleeping on cardboard boxes.  Most of the night he just tossed and turned, finally he got up and made a bed on the floor and finally went to sleep.
