There's magic for awhile

Children make you want to start life over. ~Muhammad Ali

We were still in the African Savannah area of the zoo. I was checking out the African wild dogs when Jimmy starting bouncing on my shoulders. Seemed he had spotted the lions and wanted me to “hurry Uncle John”.  I doubt he even noticed the ostriches or patas monkeys as we passed them. He was so focused on the lions.  Andrew was just as eager to get there, I noticed he was…

8.5 Months Old

I went into Aerie's room this morning to find her standing in her crib with a sunshiny grin on her face that completely melted my heart. How can it be she's 8.5 months old already? Father time steals moments and whisks them away from us only to leave us with the faint taste of their memories on the tips of our tongues.

Aerie is such a daddy's girl, except when her Mama is around then all bets are off! She's already expressed interest in walking. She's just barely 8.5 months old and…

It's nearing that time...

Edward and I stumbled upon a conversation last night which was a difficult one to address. We have both been noticing that we're being looked at a little harder these days by our colleagues. While Edward is quite good at making himself age ever so slightly, I have not had such luck. Esme and I first started to discuss this a couple years ago but the mere thought is heartbreaking to her and I decided to let it sit. It's come to the realization that it's getting too close to just…

Thank God for kids

“You can learn many things from children. How much patience you have, for instance.”

I got up early, showered and was at my sister’s by eight. Mama and Daddy were already promising the kids pancakes when I walked in the door, so we loaded into our cars and headed to the nearest I-Hop. We all loaded up on pancakes, eggs and bacon. The boys had chocolate pancakes that were served with whipped cream faces on…

My day in court

Leaving the apartment with plenty of time to reach the courthouse even with the stormy weather, still I find myself running late. It wouldn’t be so bad if people would plan ahead instead of acting like they can still make their destination in the normal amount of…

So small

“To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.”

Starting down the mountain after a quiet lunch, it becomes clearer and clearer. Though I really like the job I am doing, it isn’t where I want to be in my life. I have fallen into the very trap my daddy warned me about. Work has become my life. As I stop to watch a butterfly I…

Then again

The hike was not too difficult and I found myself taking it rather slow and just enjoying the views. I took some pictures, but mostly just let the incredible national forest take over my mind. Whether you are of a religious nature or a scientific nature, you cannot deny the overwhelming impact nature has on our…

When I get where I'm going

I headed out just after seven taking the I90, heading up to Squak Mountain. Yes the planner in me had already checked out the trails, difficulty, etc. on line I figured I could spend a good part of the day on the trails in the park. I packed plenty of water, snacks and lunch in my…

Bluffing My Way Through It

Four months ago....

It’s that time of year where the snow is piling up in the mountains and the spring thaw is a distant memory. I love to see the snow on the mountains and I enjoy the extra challenge of running through the thick white blanket. I also like the peaceful silence it brings me and it can be really nice, especially when I don’t have voices inside my head. It is also about the only time I can half-way appreciate being a wolf. That doesn’t happen very often, but when…

Dream Big

I helped his wife bring home Doug today. Though it was so hard to see such a vibrant man now relying on a wheelchair and the help of others to get around, he was in great spirits. He is the classic optimist and he won’t let those around him be negative either. My mama would call him a “ray of…

Time

Time, for us, isn't relevant. As you course through your daily activities, we observe from our timeless state. It's almost as if our residence is stuck in time as we watch the seasons and the people of Volterra pass away. We sit idle in the midst of all of your living and chaos. At first, this 'life' was everything I had ever wanted and more. It was more than I could have possibly imagined and as one could guess, it was filled with adventure, daring feats and incredible romance.

That is…

A moment in time... later in 1943

I walked into the open courtyard, the scent of lavender in the air. The sun shown brightly in the early afternoon sky and the weather was comfortable. A table was set up in the middle of the courtyard, fresh tea and croissants laid out for a small brunch. I placed a lock of dark hair behind my ear as I sat down at the table. I took a sip of my freshly brewed Earl Grey tea, savoring the flavor. Ah, the taste of freedom.

I…
